Como hace dos años, una exclusividad de Sony volvió a dominar The Game Awards. En 2018 God of War había arrasado en las principales categorías, y en esta oportunidad fue el turno de The Last of Us Part 2, que se llevó siete de las 10 nominaciones.

El juego de Naughty Dog se quedó con los premios a mejor juego del año, mejor dirección, narrativa, diseño de audio y actuación (para Laura Bailey), entre otros. 

Hades, uno de los grandes favoritos, se quedó con las categorías de mejor juego independiente y mejor juego de acción; Final Fantasy VII Remake hizo lo propio con mejor juego de rol y banda de sonido; y Among Us, el fenómeno del año, se llevó dos premios: mejor juego multijugador y mejor juego para celulares.

El argentino Gustavo Santaolalla estaba nominado en por su trabajo en la banda de sonido de The Last of Us Part 2, pero fue superado por el trabajo de Nobuo Uematsu, Mitsuto Suzuki, y Masashi Hamauzu en Final Fantasy VII Remake.

El evento contó con la presencia de varias celebridades, incluidos los actores Tom Holland y Keanu Reeves, las actrices Brie Larson y Gal Gadot, el director Christopher Nolan y el músico y compositor Eddie Vedder.
